Advocacy through Imagery

An important part of my artwork that brings a sense of purpose to my practice is my advocacy through imagery. I have always been a person motivated to help others but it wasn’t until my car accident in 2015 that it became deeply personal.

In the beginning, art was a vehicle to release pain I had no words for but I then discovered its power to communicate ideas, injustices and a big theme of my work - shedding light on what you cannot see. The theme of unveiling the invisible to bring about awareness, empathy and action has become a stronger thread in my journey and through my pieces. I am naturally drawn to the contradictions and confusion it brings in a hope I can change a person’s reaction of disbelief and dismissal to one of curiosity and connection.

The themes of my work are personal and maybe difficult for some to view. Being sensitive to this material myself, I wanted to provide a separate space to invite the viewer to see this body of work rather than having the imagery imposed upon them. You cannot change what you do not know, so my hope is that by illuminating the invisible parts of our being, kindness will ultimately prevail.
